Living The Mission: Sierra’s Story of Service, Science, and Success

When Sierra first walked through the doors of Saint Simon Parish School, she joined a community dedicated to a clear vision: building a welcoming environment grounded in academic excellence, guided by Catholic values, and focused on inspiring lives of service. Years later, as she prepares for her next chapter at Harvard University, that mission statement reads less like a school philosophy and more like the story of her life.

Small Steps, Lasting Impact

Sierra’s understanding of service took root in simple, tangible moments right here at Saint Simon. She fondly remembers participating in the annual Lenten Rice Bowl collections and fulfilling holiday wish lists for local families in need. “Reading through those wish lists in 3rd grade was a pivotal moment for me. It really showed me how small tangible choices could impact people’s lives.”

Moving on to high school at Castilleja, Sierra felt empowered to put her values into action. Through the school’s ACE Center, she joined the Pediatric Care Connect program, supporting families navigating medical crises by creating a network of care and community. “I remember getting to do those Mad Science experiments after school and how much fun they were. I wanted to recreate that with our Pediatric Care Connect work.” As part of this work, Sierra partnered with the Ronald McDonald House—and hid a special Saint Simon “Easter egg” in her outreach. Inspired by the favorite “Mad Science” vendor from Saint Simon’s extended care program, she designed hands-on science workshops to bring curiosity, laughter, and a sense of normalcy to young patients.

From earning money for Rice Bowls in the Saint Simon halls to designing enrichment programs for pediatric health centers, Sierra’s story illustrates what happens when foundational values are nurtured early. As she heads to Cambridge, she carries the Saint Simon spirit with her, proving that a life dedicated to service can truly start in a single classroom.

Best of luck in this next chapter, Sierra! Go Saints!
